Brazilian sugaring at home – or bikini line, deep bikini, bikini LA…?
Sugaring (often called sugar waxing) is a wonderful option for intimate hair removal: it helps prevent ingrown hairs, and you never get itchy, prickly stubble.
Sugaring vs waxing: what's the difference?
Both methods remove hair from the root, so results last weeks rather than days. The difference is in how they do it:
| Sugaring | Traditional waxing | |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Water, sugar and citric acid – 100% natural | Usually resins and other additives |
| Sticks to | Hair and dead skin cells only | Hair and the skin surface |
| Removal direction | In the direction of hair growth – fewer broken hairs | Usually against the growth direction |
| Temperature | Lukewarm, never hot | Often hot |
| Clean-up | Water-soluble – rinses off with water | Needs oil or a wax remover |
| Strips | No strips needed | Strips usually needed for soft wax |
That's why sugaring is often the gentler choice for the delicate skin of the bikini area – and why many people find it is better than waxing for a Brazilian.
Brazilian sugaring or bikini line sugaring?
Bikini line sugaring removes all the hair in the intimate area that would show outside ordinary underwear. The next step up could be a G-string bikini, deep bikini or bikini LA, which also remove hair from the back and a little more from the front.
Brazilian sugaring means removing all the hair from the intimate area by the root – including the pubic hair and the hair in the buttock crease, right up to the edge of the mucous membranes. You can do a Brazilian at home too, as long as you've mastered the sugaring technique and good support grips.
Doing a Brazilian at home? Remember these:
🍯 Sugar in a cool room – the intimate area warms up easily and your first sugaring can make you nervous, so a warm and/or humid room won't help.
🍯 In theory, hair can't be too long – but in practice, long hair can feel really uncomfortable in the intimate area. The sugar also grabs neighbouring long hairs, so you feel the pull 'from every direction'. So start your at-home Brazilian when the hair is at least 4 mm long (at least 2 weeks after shaving).
🍯 Remember your support grip! Hold the skin taut with your other hand for a firm grip and pull.
🍯 Don't go right onto the mucous membranes.
🍯 Give yourself time the first time. Once you've got the hang of it, a Brazilian takes about 20 minutes at home with the Sugar Buddy kit.
🍯 After a Brazilian, let your skin calm down for at least 12 hours – avoid sweaty workouts, sauna and sunbeds, and follow the usual sugaring aftercare.
