Does sugaring hurt?
It's one of the most common questions we hear – in salons and over coffee alike (if sugaring happens to come up 😉).
Why does sugaring sting for a moment?
Sugaring paste isn't hot, and it contains nothing that could sting or irritate your skin. But remember: the paste pulls hair out by the root, and that moment of removal is what most people feel. Otherwise, there's no pain after sugaring.
Removing hair from the root is exactly what makes sugaring so effective – but some people do feel pain during sessions. So how much does it hurt?
Which areas hurt the most?
The most sensitive spots are the underarms and the intimate area. Underarm skin is thin and full of glands and nerves, so it's quite different from the thicker skin on your shins or thighs. You might think hair coming through thicker skin would hurt more, but in practice the pain threshold is often lower on thinner skin.
Does it hurt less over time?
Yes. The hair follicle weakens and shrinks a little with each session, so the brief pinch of sugaring gets easier over time and the more often you sugar.
In the end, everyone's pain threshold is personal – and sugaring is no different.
